The Solution Is Not the Diagnosis
Reclaiming Joy When Pain Tries to Steal It All
There’s a moment in every journey through pain where your world feels like it’s standing still. You’ve been to the doctors, you’ve had the tests, you’ve maybe even received the diagnosis—and yet, nothing seems to change. You’re still hurting. Still waking up each day praying for relief. Still watching life pass by while your body feels like it’s fighting against you.
They attach to that word like it’s their new identity. “I have plantar fasciitis,” or “I live with chronic pain,” becomes the headline of their life story.
But what if that’s not the full picture?
What if a diagnosis is just a stepping stone—not the destination?
That was me. I started with an injury. I thought it would pass, like most things do. But it didn’t.
It turned into chronic pain in my feet. Something so simple, so seemingly small, began to strip joy from the parts of my life that meant the most—walking with loved ones, hosting community events, engaging fully with the world around me.
The doctors gave me two choices: physical therapy or break the bones in my feet and start over through surgery. I chose therapy, hoping for a better outcome. But nothing seemed to help. Every stretch I did on my own felt... not enough. Insurance denied all options along the way. And the depression of feeling stuck—of being sidelined by something I couldn’t even see—settled in deeper than the pain ever had.
Then I met Leslie.
Her studio is in Malakoff and she uses a holistic approach to fitness and overall well-being. She spoke to me like a whole person, not a collection of symptoms. She reminded me that our bodies don’t exist in isolation. Our hormones, our emotions, our routines, our hope... it all matters. Healing isn’t linear, and it’s not just about what shows up on a lab result.
In one session, she gently walked me through stretches that reached all the way to my toes—yes, those toes, where the plantar fascia ends, a detail I didn’t even know about before we met. She encouraged me to stretch just a little further. To push past fear. To challenge my own caution. And she didn’t do it with pressure—she did it with kindness and connection.
That day, something clicked.
I realized I hadn’t been stretching far enough. That I had accepted pain as permanent. That I’d been letting a diagnosis define my effort. Leslie didn’t “fix” me—but she reminded me I still had agency in my healing.
Now I’ve started a new plan.
I’m getting my hormones checked. I’ve incorporated a guided stretch routine. And I’ve set a goal: to attend Leslie’s class, surrounded by other women, drawing strength from their encouragement as I reclaim movement—not just physically, but emotionally.
Because pain doesn’t just hurt the body. It isolates. It shrinks your world. And it’s sneaky—it can convince you that you don’t have options left. That the road ends here. But here’s the truth:
You have more power than you think.
And that power doesn’t come from a diagnosis. It comes from a solution. A real, rooted, soul-deep decision to say, I’m not done yet. To explore what else could be causing your symptoms—like hormone imbalances, emotional stress, overcompensation, or deeply ingrained habits. It’s not “anti-doctor” to look within. It’s “pro-you.”
Your body wants to heal.
It’s working hard for you every day. And sometimes what it needs isn’t a prescription—it’s connection. With the right kind of movement. With someone who listens. With your own intuition. That connection becomes your path forward.
There’s no shame in feeling lost. There’s no shame in the days when just getting out of bed is the bravest thing you’ll do. But don’t stop there. Look beyond the label. Go deeper than the diagnosis. Ask: What’s really going on? And what can I do today—even if it’s something small—to step closer to healing?
You are not your diagnosis.
I know firsthand that when insurance won’t cover it, and when the doctors have run out of suggestions, it feels like a dead end. But sometimes, that’s exactly where hope shows up—in the form of a small local class. A compassionate trainer. A new idea. A whisper in your heart that says, You are not your diagnosis.
Pain doesn’t get the last word. Not if you keep showing up. Not if you stretch a little further than you thought you could. Not if you decide that this is not the end of your story.
So here’s my plea to anyone reading this, sitting in silence, thinking they’ve run out of options:
There is an answer. There is a cure—not always in the traditional sense, but in the way that your joy can return. Your energy can increase. Your mobility can expand. Your life can get bigger again.
But only if you refuse to stop at the diagnosis. Only if you decide the solution is worth fighting for. And you, dear one—you are absolutely worth it!
